Julian Nagelsmann paid tribute to “role model” Joshua Kimmich, as the German captain is set to make his 100th international appearance.

The midfielder will become his country’s 14th centurion when he leads them out in their Nations League semi-final against Portugal on Wednesday.

Fittingly, Kimmich will hit the milestone at the Allianz Arena, where he plays his club football with Bayern Munich.

Nagelsmann paid tribute to the 30-year-old, who he handed the captain’s armband to in September.

“He is a role model, with his commitment and ambition on the field,” the boss said. He gives his all on the pitch and, in training, does everything to win games.

“He can inspire the team and get them behind him. He is exceptionally talented.”

Leon Goretzka – Kimmich’s long-time partner in the heart of Bayern’s midfield – also hailed his team-mate’s achievement.

“100 caps at his age – I also don’t get the sense that he plans to stop anytime soon – that’s an incredible achievement,” Goretzka said.

“It’s great to see him rewarded for all the work he puts into his body, the discipline he has, always staying fit, always being there, always being ready to play for his team.

“As our captain, he’s almost always aware of his role as a leader and example. So, I’m really happy for him. One hundred caps is definitely a big milestone.”

are making their first appearance in the Nations League finals, and are targeting their first piece of silverware since winning the 2014 World Cup.
