Bayer Leverkusen beat Augsburg 2-0 in the Bundesliga on Saturday to postpone leaders Bayern Munich’s expected title win by at least a week.

The still reigning Bundesliga champions remain eight points behind leaders Bayern with three matches left to play. However, Vincent Kompany’s side can seal their 34th league crown with a win at RB Leipzig next week.

Patrik Schick gave Leverkusen a perfect start, striking in the 13th minute with their first real chance, drilling home from the edge of the box for his 19th league goal of the season.

Nathan Tella thought he had doubled their lead just over 10 minutes later, heading in Alex Grimaldo’s cross at the far post, but it was ruled out for offside.

Leverkusen remained on top in the first half, with Emiliano Buendia unleashing a powerful curler from outside the box that gave Finna Dahmen no chance.

Samuel Essende and Alexis Claude-Maurice both had chances to pull one back for Augsburg, but the former fired just wide before the Frenchman forced Matej Kovar into a fine stop.

Jonas Hofmann also had a chance to put the result beyond doubt with 10 minutes remaining, but he should have done better as he sent the ball just wide.

Data Debrief: Leverkusen ruin Bayern’s party

Xabi Alonso insisted Leverkusen will not give up their Bundesliga crown without a fight, and they are pushing the title race as close as they can to the end of the campaign.

The Werkself had failed to score in three of their last four home matches prior to Saturday, but two fine finishes ensured they avoided a similar fate.

It was a disappointing day for Augsburg, though. They were on an eight-match unbeaten streak away from home in the Bundesliga in 2025, but they struggled to create anything of note.

They had 11 attempts worth 0.72 expected goals (xG), though only got two on target. Leverkusen, meanwhile, got five of their 14 shots on target, outperforming their 0.81 xG by some margin.
