Amorim: Man Utd should sack me if I cannot change culture

Ruben Amorim suggested Manchester United should appoint a new head coach in his place if he cannot instigate a culture change at Old Trafford by next season.

United will face Tottenham in the Europa League final on May 21, but they have endured their worst Premier League campaign ever.

They slumped to 16th in the table with Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at home to West Ham United, who leapfrogged the Red Devils following goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen.

United are now winless in seven Premier League games (two draws, five defeats), their t-longest run in the competition’s history, having also gone seven without victory between September and November 1992.

The loss was their ninth at home in the Premier League this season, their t-most in any league campaign in their history, along with 1930-31, 1933-34 and 1962-63.

Seven of those Old Trafford defeats have come under Amorim, with two coming under Erik ten Hag before he was dismissed last October.

Amorim is expected to be given time to instil his preferred style of play, but he knows he will be on thin ice if he fails to deliver an improvement next season.

“I don’t want to talk about players,” Amorim said at his post-match press conference. “Everybody here has to think seriously about a lot of things.

“Everybody is thinking about the final. The final is not the issue. We have bigger things to think about.

“I’m talking about myself and the culture at the club. The culture in the team. I have that feeling – we need to change that.

“We need to be really strong in the summer and be brave. Because we will not have a next season like this.

“If we start like this, if the feeling is still here, we should give space to different people.”

United have only previously finished outside the Premier League’s top six on two occasions, while their eighth-placed finish under Ten Hag last term was their lowest since the top flight’s 1992 rebrand.

They are on course for their worst finish since being relegated from Division One in 21st place in 1973-74, leaving Amorim feeling humiliated.

Asked for his feelings on United’s league position, he said: “How is a manager of Manchester United supposed to feel in that position? Embarrassed.”
