Aston Villa climbed into the Champions League places after a crucial 2-0 victory over Tottenham in the Premier League.

With Manchester City in FA Cup final action this weekend, Unai Emery’s side took full advantage at Villa Park as goals from Ezri Konsa and Boubacar Kamara helped them leapfrog the Citizens into the top five.

Konsa opened the scoring just before the hour mark at Villa Park, getting his second league goal of the season with a deft finish after Ollie Watkins nodded John McGinn’s deep corner into the six-yard box.

Kamara’s first goal in the competition then secured the hosts’ ninth win in 11 league games, the midfielder cutting inside from the right, before drilling past Antonin Kinsky in the 73rd minute.

That condemned a toothless Spurs, who ed just one shot on target, to their 21st top-flight defeat of the season.

Villa climb to fourth place – though they will drop to fifth if Chelsea beat Manchester United at Stamford Bridge later on Friday – while Ange Postecoglou’s side remain 17th.

Data Debrief: Emery celebrates century with yet another victory

Villa continued their strong finish to the season, having now collected a league-high 24 points since the start of March (won eight, lost one).

Emery marked his 100th Premier League game in charge of the club with his 54th victory, eight more than any other Villa boss in their first 100 top-flight fixtures (Ron Atkinson and Tony Barton both on 46).

A week after becoming Villa’s all-time leading scorer in the division, Watkins now boasts the most goal involvements outright following his assist for Konsa (109; 75 goals and 34 assists).

Kamara made the game safe with his first Premier League goal in his 69th appearance, with only Jlloyd Samuel (79 games) and Wilfred Bouma (71) enduring a longer wait for their maiden strike for the club in the competition.

As for Spurs, they have now lost 25 games in all competitions this term; their t-highest number of defeats in a single campaign (also in 1991-92).

On a brighter note, Archie Gray made his 18th Premier League start of the season, with only three Spurs teenagers starting more in one campaign: Sol Campbell (27 in 1993-94), Dele Alli (26 in 2015-16) and Aaron Lennon (21 in 2005-06).
