Atalanta 2-3 Parma: Visitors seal survival after inspired turnaround

Jacob Ondrejka’s stoppage-time winner completed a superb turnaround for Parma, who secured Serie A survival by snatching a dramatic 3-2 victory against Atalanta.

Christian Chivu’s side recovered from 2-0 down at Gewiss Stadium to claim the win required to ensure their top-flight status for another season at least.

Atalanta were already assured of a third-place finish and Champions League football next term, and took control through Daniel Maldini’s quickfire brace.

The attacking midfielder tucked home Raoul Bellanova’s 32nd-minute cross, before rifling home a second goal within 60 seconds.

Parma were two points clear of the bottom three, but in danger of potentially getting leapfrogged by Lecce and Empoli.

Nevertheless, they appeared invigorated after the break, and halved their deficit within three minutes of the restart when Antoine Hainaut pounced on a loose ball in the box and fired home.

Half-time substitute Ondrejka’s individual effort then dragged the visitors level, before the Swede completed the turnaround in the first minute of stoppage time to stun the home fans into silence.

Data Debrief: Atalanta suffer rare defensive lapse

Atalanta were beaten after losing a two-goal lead for the first time in Serie A since November 2018 (3-2 against Empoli).

Nevertheless, La Dea’s tally of 37 goals conceded is their lowest in a 20-team Serie A season (beating the previous record of 39 from 2017-18).

In assisting Maldini’s second goal, Mateo Retegui took his number of goal involvements in this Serie A season to 33 (25 goals, eight assists). Only Mohamed Salah (47), Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane (34 each) bettered that among players in the big five European leagues.

Meanwhile, Parma recovered a two-goal deficit to win for the first time in Serie A since May 2003 (3-2 against Piacenza).
