The future of Frenkie de Jong has been uncertain for a long time now, and while earlier reports created the impression that Barcelona were giving him a nudge towards the exit door and he insisted on staying put, it seems his perspective has changed. He has now itted he would be open to leaving if he felt he couldn’t contribute, or the team wasn’t competing at the highest level.

“When I signed for Barcelona, I didn’t imagine to win only a La Liga, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup after four years. I expected at least double, so that disappoints me. Things happen on the road you can’t predict”, the 27-year-old midfielder told Dutch outlet Voetbal International.

“People think I want to stay at Barça forever because life outside football is so good here, and it is, but it’s less important to what happens on the pitch. If I’d feel that I can’t contribute enough, or the team can’t compete, I’d be gone.”

Meanwhile, reports from Spain have suggested Barcelona have warned De Jong, as well as defender Ronald Araujo, to accept their proposals for renewed deals or be placed on the transfer market. In the current situation, both players are set to enter the final year of contract in the summer.

De Jong has recently been linked with Premier League leaders Liverpool.
