Kompany proud of Bayern´s comeback despite having to wait on title

Vincent Kompany was full of pride after seeing his Bayern Munich side fight back against RB Leipzig, even though the Bundesliga title is not yet theirs.

Bayern came from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 in Saturday’s contest at Red Bull Arena.

Leroy Sane’s 83rd-minute goal had Kompany’s team on course for the title, but a stoppage-time equaliser from Yussuf Poulsen put Bayern’s celebrations on hold.

Bayern will win the title should Bayer Leverkusen fail to beat Freiburg on Sunday.

Should Leverkusen win, then a point next week against Borussia Monchengladbach would be enough to get Bayern over the line.

“In the first half we did not have the energy,” Kompany told reporters.

“It was a good game for the fans and not a bad result for us, and I am very proud of the second half.

“The reason I am proud is we had quite a few players not there [through injury] and the image and energy was not too different than what we do in our best moments.”

Bayern are missing several through injury, including Jamal Musiala, Dayot Upamecano, Alphonso Davies and Hiroki Ito.

Bundesliga top scorer Harry Kane was also missing on Saturday due to a suspension.

Kompany, in his first season in charge, is looking to bring the league trophy back to Munich after Leverkusen ended Bayern’s 11-year league stranglehold last season with a domestic league and Cup double win.

“Congratulations to the boys and we are close now,” added Kompany, whose side fell behind to Benjamin Sesko’s goal in the 11th minute.

It marked only the second goal Bayern have shipped in the opening 15 minutes of a Bundesliga game this term.

Lukas Klostermann doubled Bayern’s lead midway through the second half before quickfire goals from Eric Dier and Michael Olise restored parity, setting the stage for a grandstand finale following Sane’s effort.
