St. Louis fire head coach Mellberg after 15 games

St. Louis City SC have parted ways with head coach Olof Mellberg after just 15 MLS matches in charge.

Mellberg was hired last November, months after Bradley Carnell left the club, having led Swedish side IF Brommapojkarna for a year in his second spell.

St. Louis won just two of their 15 games under Mellberg this season (D5 L8) and sit 14th in the Western Conference on 11 points, with only winless LA Galaxy below them in the table.

More pressingly, St. Louis have scored just 11 goals during his short tenure, the fewest of any team in the West, while only CF Montreal (10) have netted fewer across MLS.

Mellberg averaged just 0.73 points per game in MLS this season, with just a 13.3% win rate.

“The decision to part ways with Olof goes beyond just results,” said sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel.

“We’ve analyzed the team’s performance across a number of factors, including the need to execute against a style of play that led to the team’s initial success and has been part of our DNA for four years.

“As a club, we have certain standards we need to meet and believe a coaching change was necessary to improve our overall performance and return to a winning culture. Our fans deserve a better-performing team, and we intend to give them one.”

David Critchley, St. Louis CITY2 head coach David Critchley will take over on an interim basis while the club searches for a new permanent boss.

St. Louis are not playing in the midweek slate of fixtures, with their first game under Critchley taking place on Saturday at home against the San Jose Earthquakes.
